What Is a Shoring Box?

The term shoring box is common jobsite terminology and is often used to refer to a standard trench box or trench shield. However, the term is not always used consistently. In some cases, someone using the term may actually be referring to a true shoring system.

When “shoring box” is being used to mean a trench box, the equipment is a shield system designed to withstand applicable cave-in forces and protect workers who remain within the shielded area.

A shoring system performs a different function. Shoring is designed to support the sides of the excavation.

Understanding that distinction is important because the equipment, configuration, installation method, and applicable design information may be different.

The complete configuration must be appropriate for the excavation and used in accordance with the applicable manufacturer specifications, recommendations, limitations, and tabulated data.

The project’s Competent Person should evaluate actual jobsite conditions and determine whether the proposed protective system is appropriate.

DOCUMENTATION MATTERS

Manufacturer Tabulated Data and Competent-Person Review

OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P distinguishes shield systems from support systems and provides design options for excavation protective systems.

When equipment is selected and used according to manufacturer tabulated data, the complete system must be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, recommendations, and limitations.

The outside dimensions of a trench shield do not, by themselves, establish its allowable excavation depth or determine whether it is appropriate for a particular pipe, structure, or utility installation.

Customers should verify the current manufacturer tabulated data for the specific equipment and configuration being used. The project’s Competent Person remains responsible for evaluating jobsite conditions, identifying hazards, and confirming that the protective system is appropriate for the excavation.

Is a shoring box the same as a trench box?

“Shoring box” is often used informally and interchangeably to describe a trench box or trench shield. Technically, however, shielding and shoring perform different functions. A trench box is a shield system designed to protect workers within the shielded area, while shoring is designed to support the excavation walls.

Do you sell steel and aluminum shoring boxes?

Does a trench box prevent the trench walls from collapsing?

How do I know what size shoring box I need?

Does trench-box height determine allowable excavation depth?

No. The physical height of a trench shield does not by itself establish the allowable excavation depth. Allowable use depends on the specific shield design, complete configuration, soil and surcharge conditions, and applicable manufacturer tabulated data.

Can trench boxes be stacked?

Some trench-box systems permit stacking when the complete stacked configuration is specifically allowed by the manufacturer’s current tabulated data. Stacking increases the physical shielded height but does not automatically increase the allowable excavation depth.
