4′ x 4′ Steel Road Plate
The Iron Lot 4′ x 4′ Steel Road Plate provides temporary coverage for narrow utility cuts, small excavations, access openings, and localized pavement work. Its square footprint makes it a practical option where a larger road plate would occupy unnecessary space or be more difficult to transport and position.
This road plate is available in 1-inch and 1¼-inch thicknesses. The tabulated design criteria are based on HS20-44 traffic loading and minimum ASTM A36 steel with a 36 ksi yield strength.
A 4′ x 4′ road plate is best suited to narrow openings because adequate bearing and edge overlap must remain on every supporting side. Plate thickness alone does not determine the allowable excavation width. The opening dimensions, supporting surface, traffic conditions, plate overlap, anchorage, and transition ramps must all be evaluated before installation.

Critical Selection & Installation Factors
Is a 4×4 Road Plate Right for Your Opening?
Road-plate selection requires more than comparing the outside dimensions of the plate with the width of the excavation.
The correct plate depends on:

clear opening dimensions;

required edge overlap;
-
plate thickness;
-
traffic type and speed;
-
supporting-surface condition;
-
pavement or soil stability;
-
vehicle wheel loading;
-
slope;
-
anchorage requirements;
-
transition-ramp requirements;
-
available lifting and placement equipment.
The tabulated maximum span is a structural limit and is not necessarily the allowable trench width for a specific 4′ x 4′ plate. Adequate plate overlap must remain beyond the excavation on every required side.
For asphalt traffic traveling under 45 mph, the tabulated data requires the plate dimension to equal the trench width plus at least 24 inches, providing a minimum of 12 inches of overlap per side.
Under that requirement, a 4-foot-wide plate could cover a trench opening no wider than approximately 2 feet in the direction being spanned, provided all other requirements are satisfied.
Applications requiring 24 inches of overlap per side generally require a larger plate. A 4′ x 4′ plate does not provide enough total width to maintain that overlap across a positive-width excavation.
HS20-44 Loading & Maximum Span
The Iron Lot tabulated data is based on HS20-44 traffic loading.
The listed maximum allowed spans are:

1-inch steel plate: 4′6″ maximum structural span;

1¼-inch steel plate: 7′0″ maximum structural span.
These values do not automatically establish the allowable opening beneath every plate. Plate dimensions, required overlap, support conditions, traffic speed, and installation details may result in a smaller permitted opening.
Any opening or condition exceeding the tabulated limits requires engineering.
The chart is based on a stable trench. Stability must be evaluated by the project’s Competent Person or engineer.
Edge Overlap & Traffic Conditions
The tabulated data provides the following minimum plate-sizing relationships:

Asphalt traffic under 45 mph: trench width plus 24 inches minimum, providing 12 inches of overlap per side;
-
Asphalt traffic over 45 mph: trench width plus 48 inches minimum, providing 24 inches of overlap per side;
-
Dirt traffic under 45 mph: trench width plus 48 inches minimum, providing 24 inches of overlap per side.
Plates used on dirt where traffic speed exceeds 45 mph require engineering.
Plates used on asphalt or concrete where traffic speed exceeds 55 mph also require engineering.
Because the 4′ x 4′ plate has only 48 inches of total width, it is generally intended for narrow openings and conditions where the required edge overlap can be maintained. Larger openings or higher-overlap conditions require a larger road plate or an engineered installation.
Placement, Support & Anchorage
The plate must have positive contact with all supporting surfaces. Voids between the plate and supporting surface can permit plate movement, impact, rocking, or excessive deflection.
Cold patch or another approved material may be used to displace voids and establish continuous contact where appropriate.
The tabulated data also states that plates may require anchorage when:

traffic speed exceeds 45 mph;
-
the installation is on a slope greater than 5%;
-
local requirements call for anchorage;
-
the Competent Person or engineer determines that movement must be restrained.
Anchorage, welds, bolts, pins, anti-skid treatments, and other installation details should be selected for the actual roadway and project conditions.
Transition Ramps
The tabulated installation detail calls for a minimum 18-inch cold-mix transition ramp around the plate.
Transition ramps help reduce abrupt tire impact at the plate edge and support smoother vehicle travel across the installation.
Ramp construction, plate recessing, surface treatment, signage, traffic control, inspection frequency, and maintenance requirements may vary by jurisdiction and project.
The contractor must confirm all state, local, owner, and project-specific requirements before placing the road plate into service.
Inspection & Handling
Road plates should be inspected before each installation and periodically while in service.
Inspect for:

permanent bending or deformation;
-
cracks or damaged edges;
-
excessive corrosion or material loss;
-
damaged lifting points;
-
worn or damaged anti-skid surfaces;
-
failed welds or attachments;
-
movement or loss of bearing;
-
deterioration of transition ramps;
-
voids beneath the plate;
-
loose or damaged anchorage.
Damaged or questionable plates should be removed from service until evaluated.
Road plates should only be lifted and positioned using properly rated equipment, rigging, and approved lifting points. Workers should remain clear of suspended plates and pinch points during loading, unloading, and placement.
