Description

6′ x 10′ ESC TSB4 Steel Trench Box

The ESC TSB4-610 is a compact steel utility trench shield built for localized utility installation, maintenance, structure work, and repair projects. Its 10-foot length provides a manageable footprint for transportation and positioning in streets, easements, and congested jobsites.

The 6-foot-tall configuration can be used as a standalone trench box where that shield height is appropriate. It can also be used as an extension shield stacked on top of a compatible taller trench box using connecting stacking pins.

The TSB4-610 is a standard open-ended trench shield. It should not be confused with a purpose-built manhole shield, which may have different end-wall, corner, and clearance configurations.

Key Benefits & Crew Efficiency

  • Compact Utility Configuration: The 10-foot length is well suited for localized utility work where a longer mainline trench box would add unnecessary size and weight.
  • Standalone or Stackable Configuration: Use the 6-foot box independently or as an extension shield stacked above a compatible taller trench box using connecting stacking pins.
  • Versatile Utility Applications: Well suited for utility tie-ins, service connections, vault installations, bore pits, spot repairs, and other concentrated excavation work.
  • Internal Working Clearance: The TSB4-610 provides 40 inches of pipe clearance and 7′11″ of clear length between spreaders.
  • Strong Depth Capability: Built with a 3,000 PSF shield capacity and maximum depth ratings of 40′ in C60 soil and 30′ in C80 soil.
  • 4-Inch-Wall Steel Construction: Weighing approximately 4,074 lbs without spreaders, the TSB4-610 combines compact utility-box handling with the flexibility of a 6-foot standalone or extension shield.

Target Applications

The 6′ x 10′ TSB4 is designed for contractors performing localized utility construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and structure work where a compact steel trench shield is preferred.

Typical applications include:

  • precast manhole installation where the structure dimensions and shield clearances are compatible;
  • valve and meter vault installation;
  • utility tie-ins, tees, crosses, and service connections;
  • bore pits and receiving pits;
  • spot repairs to water, sewer, gas, electrical, and telecommunications lines;
  • localized utility exposure and maintenance;
  • roadway and municipal utility work;
  • utility excavations in streets, easements, and congested jobsites;
  • standalone use where a 6-foot shield height is appropriate;
  • stacked configurations requiring additional shield height above a compatible taller base box.

The compact 10-foot length makes the TSB4-610 easier to transport, position, and reposition than longer mainline trench boxes while still providing useful working room for localized utility components and connections.

Suitability depends on the dimensions of the pipe, structure, vault, or utility component being installed. The working clearances of the assembled trench box should be verified before equipment is selected.

Critical Selection & Safety Factors

Is the 6×10 TSB4 Right for Your Jobsite?

Trench box selection involves more than choosing a height and length.

The correct shield depends on excavation depth, trench width, pipe or structure dimensions, soil classification, surcharge conditions, groundwater, adjacent structures, excavator capacity, transportation requirements, and jobsite access.

The 6×10 TSB4 is worth considering when a localized utility excavation requires a 6-foot shield height but does not require the length, weight, or handling demands of a 12-foot, 16-foot, or 20-foot trench box.

It is also a practical fleet option for contractors who need a compact standalone utility box that can serve as an extension shield above a compatible 8-foot or 10-foot trench box.

Although the TSB4-610 may be suitable for some precast manhole and vault installations, it is a standard open-ended trench shield rather than a dedicated manhole box. Verify that the dimensions and configuration provide the required clearance for the structure, rigging, installation method, and crew.

When used as part of a stacked system, the box should be connected with the appropriate stacking pins. The complete configuration must be evaluated according to the applicable tabulated data and actual jobsite conditions.

For projects requiring more longitudinal working room, a 6×12, 6×16, or 6×20 TSB4 may be more appropriate. For projects requiring more standalone shield height, an 8-foot or taller trench box may be a better fit.

We can help you compare trench box sizes and configurations based on your excavation requirements, utility component dimensions, equipment, transportation needs, and preferred working clearances.

Depth Ratings & Tabulated Data

The listed depth ratings must be evaluated together with the applicable manufacturer tabulated data and actual jobsite conditions.

The Competent Person is responsible for evaluating excavation conditions, determining the applicable soil classification, accounting for surcharge loads and adjacent structures, and selecting and using the protective system accordingly.

Groundwater, excavation geometry, spoil pile placement, heavy equipment near the excavation, and other site-specific conditions must also be considered.

For stacked trench box configurations, the complete system arrangement, box compatibility, stacking connections, and applicable tabulated data must also be evaluated.

The dimensions of the pipe, structure, vault, or utility component must be reviewed to confirm that it can be installed within the available pipe clearance, spreader spacing, and working area of the shield.

Spreader Configurations

The correct spreader configuration depends on the required trench width, pipe or structure dimensions, installation method, and the amount of working clearance needed inside the trench box.

When requesting a quote, send us the project information needed to evaluate available configuration options, including:

  • excavation depth;
  • soil classification;
  • required trench width;
  • pipe, structure, or utility component dimensions;
  • required working clearance;
  • standalone or stacked use;
  • project location;
  • quantity of trench boxes required.

We can help with spreader options, stacking pins and configuration requirements, current availability, equipment quotes, and freight and delivery coordination.
