The Kundel V-Panel is one of several aluminum trench boxes  available from Iron Lot for utility, excavation, and municipal applications.

Description

8′ x 8′ Kundel V-Panel Aluminum Trench Box

The Kundel 8′ x 8′ V-Panel is a modular aluminum trench-protection system designed for congested utility excavations, intersecting utility clusters, spot repairs, and underground work where a conventional fixed-wall trench box may be difficult to position around existing infrastructure.

Unlike a standard trench shield with fixed sidewalls, the V-Panel system uses independently adjustable vertical aluminum panels. Individual panels can be raised or lowered within the frame to accommodate crossing utilities, irregular pipe elevations, service lines, conduit, and other underground obstructions.

This configuration measures 8 feet high by 8 feet long and has a listed system weight of approximately 1,398 lbs. Its 2.5-inch vertical aluminum panels provide a listed panel capacity of 1,200 PSF. Maximum soil depth ratings are listed at 48 feet in Type A soil, 27 feet in Type B soil, and 20 feet in Type C soil, subject to the applicable Kundel tabulated data and complete system configuration.

The Iron Lot basic kit is listed with two open ends and four 40–64-inch adjustable beam spreaders. Additional spreader ranges, end-closing components, hydraulic adjusters, leg kits, and other accessories may be available depending on the planned excavation.

Key Benefits & Crew Efficiency

  • Independent Vertical Panel Adjustment: Individual panels can be repositioned to work around crossing utilities, irregular pipe configurations, and unexpected underground obstructions.
  • 8-Foot Panel Height: Provides increased vertical coverage for compatible utility, repair, and maintenance excavations.
  • 8-Foot Working Length: Provides more longitudinal working room than the 8′ x 6′ configuration without requiring the excavation length of the 8′ x 10′ or 8′ x 12′ systems.
  • 1,200 PSF Panel Capacity: Provides manufacturer-listed panel capacity for compatible excavation and underground utility applications.
  • Designed for Congested Utility Work: Well suited to intersecting utility clusters, improperly mapped infrastructure, spot repairs, and excavations involving several utility elevations.
  • 6061-T6 Aluminum Panels: High-strength extruded aluminum construction helps reduce system weight compared with many conventional steel protective systems.
  • Pin-Less Panel Adjustment: Panels are repositioned through Kundel’s clamping system rather than through a series of loose adjustment pins.
  • Steel Knife Edges: Detachable steel knife edges help the vertical panels penetrate soil during approved installation procedures.
  • Reinforced Tamping Areas: Steel tamping blocks help protect the aluminum panel extrusion during installation.
  • Variable-Width Framing: Aluminum horizontal walers and telescoping steel end beams allow the system width to be adjusted for compatible excavation dimensions.
  • Expandable End Protection: Compatible panels and brackets may be used to close one or both ends or create three- and four-sided configurations where permitted by the manufacturer.

Iron Lot can coordinate delivery to your contractor yard, municipal facility, equipment location, or jobsite.

Target Applications

The Kundel 8′ x 8′ V-Panel is primarily designed for utility and spot-repair excavations where an 8-foot panel height is needed and existing infrastructure makes a conventional fixed-wall trench box difficult to use.

Typical applications may include:

  • Intersecting utility clusters
  • Improperly mapped underground utilities
  • Water-service and water-main repairs
  • Sewer-service and sewer-main repairs
  • Gas-service connections
  • Electrical and telecommunications work
  • Utility tie-ins, tees, crosses, and service connections
  • Localized utility exposure
  • Valve, meter, and utility-component access
  • T-off excavations from an existing main trench
  • Spot repairs in streets and easements
  • Congested jobsites with multiple utility elevations

The independently adjustable panels allow the system to be configured around crossing pipe, conduit, cables, and other existing utilities. A panel can be positioned higher or lower than adjacent panels when permitted by the complete system design and applicable tabulated data.

The 8-foot panel length provides additional working room compared with the 8′ x 6′ configuration. This can be useful for compatible pipe, fittings, valves, rigging, tools, utility connections, and crew movement.

Compared with the 8′ x 10′ and 8′ x 12′ configurations, the 8-foot-long system requires less longitudinal excavation and positioning room. This may be beneficial where the work area is restricted by pavement limits, existing utilities, traffic-control requirements, structures, or landscaping.

Suitability depends on the excavation dimensions and the size, depth, and location of every pipe, fitting, valve, conduit, cable, structure, tool, and piece of equipment used during the work. Customers should verify that the selected spreader width, panel positions, and end configuration provide adequate clearance.

Independent Vertical Panel Adjustment

The defining feature of the V-Panel system is its ability to adjust individual vertical panels independently. When a crossing utility or irregular obstruction is encountered, the affected panel may be repositioned while the surrounding panels remain at their required elevations.

The panel clamping system uses a pin-less sliding design. Adjustment is performed by partially loosening the applicable clamping bolts, repositioning the panel, and retightening the system according to Kundel’s procedures.

All panels must be properly secured before the system is placed into service. Vertical adjustment must remain within the limitations established by the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable tabulated data.

Open-End, Three-Sided and Four-Sided Configurations

The standard Iron Lot basic kit is listed with two open ends. This arrangement provides access for compatible pipe, utility components, excavation equipment, and installation work.

Where additional end protection is required, compatible brackets and vertical panels may be attached to the framing to close one or both ends. Depending on the project and manufacturer approval, the V-Panel system may be configured as:

  • A two-sided open-end system
  • A three-sided system with one closed end
  • A four-sided system with both ends closed
  • A T-off or intersecting-trench configuration

End panels and connecting components should not be assumed to be included with the basic kit. Confirm the required configuration and complete component list before ordering.

Critical Selection & Safety Factors

Is the Kundel 8′ x 8′ V-Panel Right for Your Excavation?

The exterior height and length of the system do not by themselves determine whether it is suitable for a project.

The selection process should consider:

  • Excavation depth, width, length, and geometry
  • Soil classification
  • Surcharge loads
  • Groundwater and changing soil conditions
  • Adjacent traffic, structures, spoil piles, and equipment
  • Existing utility locations and elevations
  • Pipe and utility-component dimensions
  • Required panel elevations
  • Selected spreader range and system width
  • Open-end, three-sided, or four-sided configuration
  • Access and egress requirements
  • Assembly, lifting, driving, and removal equipment
  • Whether the system will be used for shielding or another manufacturer-approved configuration

The 8-foot panel height does not mean the system is limited to an 8-foot-deep excavation. It also does not mean the system can automatically be used at its maximum listed soil depth under every jobsite condition.

The project’s Competent Person must inspect the excavation, classify the soil, evaluate surcharge loads and adjacent hazards, and verify that the complete system is appropriate for the excavation and installed correctly.

Depth Ratings & Tabulated Data

The listed maximum soil depth ratings for the 8′ x 8′ configuration are:

  • Type A soil: 48 feet
  • Type B soil: 27 feet
  • Type C soil: 20 feet

These ratings must be interpreted through the current applicable Kundel tabulated data. The allowable depth may depend on the selected system width, panel elevations, end configuration, installation method, soil conditions, surcharge loads, and intended system use.

The listed depth rating is not the same as the height of the protected work area. Panel placement, the allowable distance from the bottom of the panels to the excavation bottom, and the allowable distance from the top of the panels to the top of the excavation must comply with applicable safety requirements and manufacturer instructions.

Excavations exceeding 20 feet in depth generally require a protective system designed or approved under the applicable engineering requirements. Do not rely on a product-page rating as a substitute for current tabulated data or a project-specific engineered design when one is required.

Because product specifications and tabulated data can be revised, verify all ratings against the current manufacturer documents supplied with the equipment.

Assembly, Installation & Handling

The V-Panel system must be completely assembled with the required panels, walers, spreaders, connectors, clamps, and locking components before use.

The complete 1,398-pound system should not be manually lifted or repositioned. Use approved lifting points, rigging, and equipment with sufficient rated capacity for the complete configuration.

Steel knife edges at the bottom of the panels assist with panel installation, while reinforced tamping blocks help protect the aluminum extrusion. Installation and panel driving must follow Kundel’s approved procedures and must not damage the panels, frame, clamps, or connecting components.

Before each use, inspect:

  • Extruded aluminum panels
  • Panel clamps and locking mechanisms
  • Steel knife edges
  • Steel tamping blocks
  • Horizontal walers and frame members
  • Spreaders and spreader adjusters
  • End-panel brackets and connectors
  • Rigging and lifting points
  • Welds and structural areas
  • Components for cracks, bends, distortion, damage, or excessive wear

Damaged or questionable components should be removed from service until they have been evaluated according to the manufacturer’s requirements.

Why Choose the Kundel 8′ x 8′ V-Panel?

The 8′ x 8′ V-Panel combines substantial vertical coverage with a balanced 8-foot working length. Its independently adjustable panels allow contractors to work around crossing utilities and varied utility elevations while maintaining a modular trench-protection configuration.

The 8-foot length provides more room than the 8′ x 6′ configuration for compatible pipe, fittings, valves, tools, rigging, and crew movement. It also requires less excavation length than the 8′ x 10′ and 8′ x 12′ systems.

Its listed 1,200 PSF panel capacity and soil depth ratings make this configuration worth considering when independent panel adjustment, increased vertical coverage, and a moderate excavation footprint are all important to the project.

Final selection must be based on the actual excavation, intended application, existing utility locations, component dimensions, selected spreader configuration, current manufacturer’s tabulated data, and the requirements established by the project’s Competent Person.
